Simple Household Budgeting

“Budget”   The word itself sends some people screaming from the room.  I’ve never understood why but then again, it’s not a skill I’ve struggled to master.  I guess the problem is that people associate budgeting with being restricted, with having to make sacrifices and choices about how they spend their money.   But budgeting is not just about finding your way through financial difficulty; people of all income levels must budget.

No matter how much money you have access to, isn’t it a good idea to make conscious decisions about how you’re going to use it ?

What I’ve realized in working with clients is that it’s really not so much the idea of budgeting that clients resist.  The problem is that they simply don’t know how to do it.  I’ve learned that sometimes it’s not enough to provide a client with a worksheet and ask them to complete it.  Clients have the greatest success when we walk through the budgeting process together and revisit it on a regular basis.

It is absolutely impossible to be financially successful without a working command of your income and expenses.

If you are unable to manage the flow of money you currently have in your life, having more of it to manage will not make your life easier.  In fact, as you begin to gain control of your spending, you make room for more and when you learn to direct your money toward that which is most meaningful to you, your experience of your money will become fundamentally more positive.
